Bristol appointed UK's first cycling city

£100m package for cycling in 12 towns and cities

Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly today (19 June) appointed Bristol as the UK's first official Cycling City, and announced a further 11 Cycling Demonstration Towns across England.

Bristol and the 11 towns have succeeded in winning a share of the record £100m investment package to pioneer innovative ways to increase cycling in their areas. Proposals include improving cycling infrastructure such as dedicated cycle lanes, increasing bike parking provision and cycle training and promoting the benefits of cycling.

Wimbledon fans can be forgiven for doing a double take if their car breaks down at this year's tournament and the AA turns up to fix it – on a bicycle.

The AA is going back to it's roots and launching cycle-based breakdown patrols to tackle traffic chaos at big events.

Bike It trebles cycling levels for third year in a row

Sustrans' "Bike It" project has trebled cycling levels at participating schools for a third year in a row.

The Bike It project, now in its fourth year, continues to buck all the trends for cycling to school - everyday cycling levels are five times the national average in its schools and in some cases even higher.

Plans to build a bus lane along part of the Bristol to Bath cyclepath have been dealt a fatal blow.

The Evening Post can reveal the councillor in charge of transport, Mark Bradshaw, has decided to oppose any plans for a high-speed bus route along the cyclepath.

The move comes after cabinet member Mr Bradshaw visited Cambridge, which is currently installing a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system similar to those proposed for the Bristol area.

There are several architects sketches on the site. Here's the text:

"The cycle houses are designed with the bike and rider in mind - bike facilities are key to the design and the house is connected to the Bristol & Bath cycle path.
